A UPS is only a solution until you can get the generator on line.

Power failures are quite common here, most lasting an hour or so,
but every time the Democrats win big in an election we have one
that lasts 4 to 7 days (4.5 days starting on Clinton's first
inauguration, and 7 days last December :-).

I bought a 3000 watt Honda generator about 4 years ago, and have
only had one outage that took our systems down.  The power went
out about 3am, and I didn't wake up to switch things to the
generator (ruined 900+ days of uptime on a FreeBSD 4.8 server).

The Honda generator is extremely quiet so doesn't bother he
neighbors.
