I broke it! How can I fix it?

sfdisk looks very much the same as fdisk or other partitioning tool;  am 
I missing some additional functionality that helps to copy the boot sector?

The use of dd works as Lonni described; I was unfamiliar with using it 
to copy blocks (as opposed to a file name) and did not know that 
/dev/sda would point to the actual beginning of the drive.  I guess in 
retrospect that should be obvious.
