Atheros wireless woes

Just got a new Acer Travelmate 2480 notebook to replace one that was
overheating. The research that I did before buying it indicated that
everything worked well in Linux, but I'm not getting any love for the
wifi.

Its got the following embedded wireless controller:

Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5006EG 802.11 b/g
Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01) 168c:001c

This is supposedly supported in both the open source ath5k driver, and
the madwifi driver, yet neither is working for me. The madwifi spews
an error about a bad hardware revision. ath5k attempts to bring it
up, and never can find a signal (even though its sitting about 2 ft
from the WAP).

Anyone here got any Atheros chips working in linux?
