Alternative to Crontab

Could you describe your connection to your ISP?
What I am getting at is: in a normal setup where you are running linux or
such on your machine at home, and you connect via phone, DSL, Cable or
whatever to your ISP, they would have NO WAY of determining what you are
running on your own machine, other than the traffic that it generates.
And most ISP's don't care what you run - - it's the total traffic they are
worried about. Yes, some don't want you running services such as web sites
and email services on your own machine, but we're not talking about that.
So how are you connected, and on whose machine would you LIKE to run a cron
job.??
