Yes. I always unpack such stuff to /opt to avoid poluting the /usr
with non-packaged software. The new Firefox takes over any existing
Firefox/Iceweasel default directory, so all your settings and
bookmarks are intact. You do have to put links for any plugins in
place manually, but all my plugins worked without a hich.

Also, you'll need to create new / update old icons if you want to run
it that way. Under KDE, I just right click and run
/opt/firefox/firefox. The firefox script (don;t try to run the
firefox.bin) takes care of setting up the libraries, etc.
