using GPS devices in linux?

I've just started to look into this, but haven't gotten very far yet. I recently
received a Garmin GPSmap 76CSx as a birthday present, and have been using it at
work for mine mapping (actually I intended it for my Canada fishing trips,
but...). It is an excellent handheld mapping GPS unit, and at least under
Windows there are a lot of ancillary apps to make the most of it. I'm not too
familiar with the mobile units.

As noted in Roger's previous post, we use some of the Trimble stuff here at work
(mostly the super-accurate surveying stuff) but even the handhelds are waaaay
out of my price range.

It would be nice if Garmin would start making software for Linux available - or
at least making the mapsets in a format where someone could make a Mapsource
equivalent to deal with the data. There may be such a thing, but I haven't found
it yet.
