I use evolution against (1) a local courier IMAP server on the same
machine, (2) a remote courier IMAP server accessed via an IMAP proxy,
and (3) a remote pop server. It has always worked well. No hangs. I have
many dozens of folders, many with hundreds or thousands of messages. In
fact, what keeps me using evolution is that it seems to not hang or
block when keeping all these folders up-to-date. I can read other
messages while it is getting new messages elsewhere. Kmail was sh*t at
this. Thunderbird was little better.

I think the best one is the one that works with your message sources.

My only problems with evolution were a few years back when doing
updates. I think gnome was often at fault. It is not very
upgrade-friendly, IMHO.
