Automagically generate xorg.conf?

I am recovering from a hasty install a while back.  I am running gentoo
with x.org.  Is there some utility that will write the dynamically
generated config to a file that I can edit?  I have a top end AGP card
and would like to get something more than the 16 bit depth I currently
have.  I truly suck at generating xorg.conf files by hand.  (I have yet
to get one that works, ever.)
