"grep" not working

I think there is something different between the login environments,
that is causing this problem - I just cannot find it


I log in as root, the (su -) to the user login, and run the grep - no
data

I exit, then (su) to the user login (without the -), and run the grep -
this time it works

Unfortunately not, I just tested one of the files.  The file has
permissions:

-rwxrwxrwx  1 root root     (full permissions)


Just to make double sure, I also VI'd the file
