We use horde/imp and a variety of the tools available with this.
I have developed admin tools we use with our OpenPKG.org based
installations that make configuring these pretty easy based on
templates and master configuration files.

Personally my preferred mail client is mutt, and I only use the
IMP web interface rarely.  One feature that it has that I really
like is the ability to send attachments as URLs in the message,
storing the attachments on the web server so it's not sending
huge messages.  This is a feature I would like to see in mail
clients other than webmail, but it would be a bit more difficult
to implement.
