Speaking of Chernobyl, there's a fascinating discussion of the Chernobyl in
Robert Williscroft's recent book ``The Chicken Little Agenda: Debunking
``Expert's'' Lies''. Williscroft is a scientist who spent 23 years as an
atmospheric scientist at NOAA after serving as an officer on U.S. nuclear
submarines where he got a good education in the care and maintenance of
nuclear reactors.
He says that the Chernobyl failure occurred when the people running the
site were trying to find a way to perform maintenance without having to
shut the reactor down entirely. Their first attempts failed because the
automatic safety features shut things down so they disabled five safety
systems in order to make the tests.
