Thanks guys - great info.  I'll probably start w/ OpenVPN.  



In reality it will be hubby who is using it.  We are finally about to rid ourselves of $M completely as we are sick and tired of the poor performance on our family laptop.  It's an old DELL inspiron w/ 1.5G Celeron - we think it will do better w/ Linux; my husband uses it for tunneling into work and my son uses it for fantasy baseball, IM, browsing, but no gaming.  And of course I've been saying for *years*
that Linux should be on the laptop.
