The only time I have used alien (I'm currently running Ubuntu) is when
they release openoffice 2.x and I want it straight away a few days ahead
of the official ubuntu packagers release.

The only issue I've found with the alien converted rpm to deb
installation is the menu shortcuts all launch openoffice but fail to
open a new document of the type which the menu is for eg. it doesn't
open a blank writer doc for instance but just openoffice and then you
have to click file ==> new ==> spreadsheet|text document etc.
