I'm using XFCE with Fedora 7 and it works very well so far. No hangs or
strange stuff. But mine is a clean wipe and re-install, so maybe that's
why I'm not seeing the same things as you.
I installed my XFCE using 'yum groupinstall' for F7:
[chongym at jadeblue ~]$ rpm -qa | grep xfce
xfce4-icon-theme-4.4.1-1.fc7
xfce4-session-4.4.1-1.fc7
xfce-mcs-manager-4.4.1-1.fc7
xfce-mcs-plugins-4.4.1-1.fc7
libxfce4util-4.4.1-2.fc7
xfce4-mailwatch-plugin-1.0.1-6.fc7
xfce-utils-4.4.1-1.fc7
libxfcegui4-4.4.1-2.fc7
xfce4-panel-4.4.1-1.fc7
xfce4-appfinder-4.4.1-1.fc7
xfce4-mixer-4.4.1-1.fc7
libxfce4mcs-4.4.1-2.fc7
xfce4-session-engines-4.4.1-1.fc7
[chongym at jadeblue ~]$ uname -a
Linux jadeblue.localdomain 2.6.21-1.3194.fc7 #1 SMP Wed May 23 22:35:01

Not sure if this helps.
Regards.
