Are you talking about the icons on your desktop? To remove them, just
right click the desktop (make sure XFCE is managing your desktop),
Settings > Desktop Settings > click the Behavior tab

The second section is "Desktop icons", I think the drop-down list there
has "File/launcher icons" as the default. Just change it to "None" to
get rid of them. Or, if you are like me, you could choose "Minimized
application icons", for the CDE look and feel.
