Sending format in Thunderbird

I found (after posting) that I have to go to Account settings ->
Composition and Adressing and check/uncheck "compose messages in html
format". But a test message I sent before unchecking arrived in
text/plain, when by rights it should be text/html...
(And mine-on Gentoo- didn't ask before sending.)
