I think sudo is a wonderful feature of Ubuntu. Can't imagine why every 
distro doesn't do it this way. Get really irritated at all the 'spurts 
who just can wait to tell people how to turn it off.

Here's what I do, add this to the end of my ~/.bashrc file:

   alias suh='sudo -H bash'

Then I can just type 'suh' whenever I want to get into "root" mode and 
do a bunch of admin stuff.
