new partition

I have an unused logical partition /dev/hda9, which is the last
partition in the (IDE) disk. No unpartitioned space. Now I need to use
another partition, but hda9 is too big. So, I would delete /dev/hda9 and
then make a smaller hda9 with fdisk. The problem is that this disk is
the system disk and I'm on ssh, so unmouting everything is not an
option. So, is it safe to do it, given that the numbering of the
partitions in use would not need to change?
