Rick,

If you create a new user, then can you login to that user under gnome ?

One time I had a similar problem ( with Suse 10.1 ) and I created
another user which worked fine under gnome, then I compared the two
directories. I do not remember exactly, but it seems some files under
~/.gnome or ~/.gnome2 was the culprit.
