Alternately, I just tried "init 1" on my debian etch system and it went 
to single user mode, which should allow installing nvidia drivers.

Of course, to use either "init 1" or "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" you must be 
root.

To return to X you can use "init 2" or "/etc/init.d/gdm start" respectively.

(although my try at "init 2" yields portmap errors, so I just rebooted.
