Secure Shells

Does anyone here have a document I can read, that will give me a basic
but thorough overview of secure shells ? I have always used rsh, but
now that we migrated onto Linux, we are using secure shells, and I am
still having trouble understanding the concept properly, for example
allowing another host as a trusted host.

My current issue is trying to do a backup to a remote tape drive, but
the host won't allow me access to the tape device.

(I am trying to run the backup from a Unix (Solaris) server, to a Linux
(Suse) server, which uses a secure shell).
