I use a program called Acronis TrueImage which does much the same thing,
except you can place the file anywhere, even on a disk on another computer
over a network. It copies any and all partitions that you want to save and
places them in a normal file (with compression of your choice).
It has been a lifesaver in many instances... especially with Windows
machines.
1) Had a HD seemed ready to die last week. Did a TI backup of it and just
swapped it out and then restored.
2) Wanted to upgrade a laptop HD (IBM) which didn't have a DVD writer on it.
Made a TI backup to another machine over the network. Swapped the drive and
restored. Magic!
Been worth it's weight in gold.
