A friend who has done a lot of work with LRP (Linux Router Project) and
later Linux router software has done a fair amount of work with these.
Tom has configured the firewall rules so that they allow ssh access
from the Internet to the router for a minute or so after the router is
rebooted to allow him access to it if necessary to tweak configuration.
He has installed these were there's nobody on the site that can even be
asked or trusted to do things via the router's web interface (e.g. at
his Mother's house :-).
One can do things like set up IPSec as well, something not supported by
the router in its vanilla form.
