During initial setup of the domain controller, be sure to configure the 
server to do DNS and WINS.  If you plan to do DNS by some other means, then 
just make sure there are records telling your 2000 and up clients where to 
find the domain controller.  Since 2000, the clients use DNS to find the 
domain controller.  The easiest way to accomplish this is to setup the 
domain controller to do DNS.  As for assigning drive letters for shares, 
this is easily accomplished through group policy, and a simple script.  I 
can provide example scripts if need be.   BTW Happy New Year Ben, and also
