It seems the problem is with the version of libc6; it is "supposed" to 
provide the dynamic linker support.
However, as I mentioned previously users have coaxed and cajoled some 
other current distro's into cooperating.

Interestingly, some SuSE 10 users have gotten good results by installing 
the shlibs5 package group from an earlier release.
