Running ldd on the xwp executable in ~/wpbin is the first 
troubleshooting step.

It reported libc.so.5 and libm.so.5 residing in /usr/i386-compat-gnulibc1,
so the startup shell script is doing its job and setting the 
environment, i.e. telling xwp where to find its libc5.

What is happening here, I think, is the same problem that occurs with 
other problematic distro's, namely the Linux dynamic linker (ld.so) is 
not working.
