[ot] fastest and safest way to discharge a rechargeable battery?

I 've not tried discharging a battery quicky but I did try charing it
quickly. 

It was when I was 7 or 8 years old hoping that I could find a way to
charge batteries for my toys.  I connected the electric outlet to a D
battery : using a very long wire ( I guessed either the wire would be
broken or the battery be exploded ) with a very thin copper at the
battery end  with the hope that this end would be broken first. At
least I was right that that thin end was exploded immediately. The
battery turned pretty hot and I learned that it has no power at all. :)

And it was not my first experiment of physics :)
