philosophical.  How about using alien?  Won't that let you install RPMs
on whatever distro you are running?  I do like kubuntu for the kids
machines.  I run gentoo for my server and my main machine.  (Although I
have let it get so far out of date that I must do a reinstall soon.
Almost five years is a pretty good stretch for a modern distro, I think.)

Pick what you like.  There are bound to be tools to let you get what you
want onto you box.  Ain't choices grand?
