Increasing Use Of PIPE Links

I love my ISP. I get interesting 'what we are doing' emails. They are
the cheapest I have found. The service goes down so little that I don't
notice it.
Their web interface is simple. I get a fixed IP and the cost of more
services isn't ripping my wallet out through my navel....
And they use Linux for most of their servers (AFAIK)...
Anyway if you're an Aussie I would recommend them... Telstra otoh is a
rip off.
End proselytizing...

Since Exetel implemented a cross connect to PIPE over a year ago the
growth of traffic utilizing that link has steadily grown.
When Akamai (who among other major clients provides the downloads for
all Microsoft products in this region) put its servers in to the PIPE
Sydney data centre the usage has increased more quickly.
With the current interest in Australian customers downloading VISTA the
PIPE bandwidth has become 'maxed out' for some hours each day.
While the peak distribution interest in VISTA will taper off over the
next few months the increasing use of this link is likely to remain.
In our analysis the PIPE link is used by an increasing number of games
players as well as to download software upgrades from Akamai's other
major software and opsys clients and, of course, many of the major
Australian heavy use sites.
Exetel has ordered an upgrade to the PIPE link from 100 mbps to 1,000
mbps which will, almost certainly, be activated by the end of February 2007.
