thanks. unfortunately, it wants to blow up for lack of newer versions of 
perl, and perl is notorious for breaking other things with version 
changes.

as it turns out, kvideoencoder does a strartlingly good job, *provided* 
that you have prerequisite packages. it does not tell you what these 
packages are, though, unless you read the install file in the source 
tarball. if you install the binary and try to do something it does not 
wanrt, it segfaults without a how-de-do. and it lacks docs.

but once you read the install and get the stuff it wants -- pretty 
modest list, actually, a lot less than many other apps that purport to 
do much the same thing -- it hums along like a champ.
