dvd ripping/burning

hi, chilluns . . . long time!

have a little project here which has me somewhat flummoxed.

i have a dvd of a television show, a segment of which i have permission
to distribute and use. so the purpose of the exercise is to rip just
that part of the show from the dvd, save it to some kind of file (it's
12 minutes, 13 seconds long, so presumably it would in fact then burn
just fine to plain CDs).

have spent most of a day attempting to compile libraries needed to run
applications (which would in turn need to be compiled) which may or may
not do this. i'm running, btw, suse 10.0.

have read dvds just fine; never burned one here though.

anyway, there is surely some nice, precompiled set of stuff that can be
gotten someplace to perform what seems to me ought to be a fairly
simple function.

ideas?

tia.
