Opsys Version (which command to use ?)

I am trying to compile a list of all our servers, with the exact opsys
that we are running on that servers. The "uname" command only gives me
kernel information, and not which operating system and patches I am
running, eg. Suse SLES 9 service pack 3.

How can I find this information? I found some URL's talking about
files like /etc/SuSE-release, but some of my servers have more than 1
file in /etc .... files from previous installations ?

/etc/SuSE-release
/etc/UnitedLinux-release

This means I cannot depend on these files for the opsys and version.
How can I find the exact software I am running on the server ? This
should be simple, but I cannot figure this one out yet.
