Intraoffice messaging via Jabber

I'm trying to set up a client with a (very simple) intra office messaging 
system. Jabber is capable to do everything I need, but the clients don't seem 
to work like I need them to.

The Jabber clients all seem to be based on a "chat" metaphor (click on a user 
and open a 2-way interactive conversation with them).

I want a "messaging" metaphor (click on a user and send them a quick one-line 
message, user sees a screen with all their one-line messages displayed in a 
list). This is kinda "e-mail lite".

This is basically to replace all the yellow sticky notes and all the "while 
you were out" notes.

If any of this made any sense, does anyone know of a solution.
