I have no experience whatsoever with apt and debian stuff. One thing I
like about Archlinux is that I've been able to make my own packages from
source and integrate them into the package management. But I've been
working in a chroot, so I don't have any real live experience with it yet.
I also tried Gobolinux (anyone?). The installer is really smooth, and
the CD can be used as a live CD, even better looking than KNOPPIX. But I
was put off by the lack of organized documentation.
BTW: Maybe someone can provide some input about how to deal with updates
of the toolchain when using distros based on rolling releases? Updating
glibc and linux-headers is probably OK as long as the other binary
packages are also updated. But what about software compiled from source
against the former toolchain? Should it be recompiled? And if
glibc/gcc/binutils/headers are not updated, does it means that other
binary packages shouldn't be upgraded?
A mixed (binaries/sources) distro is what I find more comfortable, but
this issue may be a spoiler...
