I went back to # pppconfig, did a complete run through the program and when 
I got to what device to use, instead of choosing /ttyS0, and then instead of 
ln -s /ttyS0 to /ttyACM0, I just put /dev/ttyACM0 in the configuration.
Voila!!  you were right, it fixed it.
