Strictly an amateur here, but I've come across these databases over the years: 
PostgreSQL, MySQL, Sqlite, and the Berkeley. I don't think that there is any 
question that PostgreSQL is the 800 pound gorilla but, depending upon your 
application, I've had very good results with Sqlite. It's simple & reliable.
