What I did for that purpose was to set my desktop background to a jpeg
monochromatic image, and hide everything (no panel, etc). How easy it is
might depend on your DE (I'm a KDE user, and I don't really know about
others). Note that this is not so clumsy as it seems, since you only
need to try three colors (red, blue and green).
I'm sending you three files off list. You probably don't need it, but
anyway...
