I grew up in a suburb of NYC, so I know that feeling.  That's why I love 
the open spaces out here.  What really amazes me is how utterly quiet it 
is in the desert.  When I was standing out on the salt pan at Badwater, it 
was completely silent.  I didn't hear a thing, no wind, no people, 
nothing.
