no. a shutdown is a shutdown, it doesn't matter from where. Its not
slow, its just that Suse is mildly retarded, and masks the shutdown
process if performed from within X, so it seems like nothing is happening
for a while.

SuSE-10.1 has XGL turned on by default, i believe. As a result you must
have the composite extension available to X or all hell breaks lose. I'd
suggest using yast, or wtf tool suse is using these days to configure X to
fix the mess. SuSE manages to produce some of the ugliest, most
convoluted xorg.conf files i've ever sen.
