Ubuntu does ship the nvidia X driver, and I believe that Debian does as
well. I'm afraid that I know very little about their packaging as we
(NVIDIA) do not support them at all.
There's no reason why you can't just install the official driver package
though. I've done it many times in Ubuntu, and also Debian. You might
