We had some Texans living in Helena, we'd salute in a general
south-eastern direction towards the homeland and eat great chili, tell
tall stories and even taller lies. Most of the population that is native
born are all Irish, descendants of the miners.
St. Patty's day in Montana rivals the celebrations in Chicago. Everyone
gets drunk and evens old scores. Even stranger is the predilection for
Chinese Food. Back when, the miners, who had left home and family to
stake out a claim and get stinking rich were without home cooked meals.
So, the Chinese who had worked on the railroads, filled the niche with
cheap yet good healthy food. A bowl of chicken broth noodles, several
slices of roast pork to dip in hot mustard and sesame seeds, and one or
two hard-boiled eggs. That was a miner's lunch. They still serve it as
traditional fare to the children and grandchildren of the original
miners. It's not bad, I just never saw Peking Roast Duck offered. I had
to move. Way too damn cold and no good Duck. We had 70 below for a week
at Xmas, the year I decided to move.
I miss the good common sense of no speed limits. If you go TOO fast,
they'll get you for reckless and bury you under the jail. They just have
no need for the courts, the dockets, the lying by the accused, the
Judge, bailiff, computer networks to record and track the offenses. Even
the State Police go home to sleep, no 3rd shift. You wreck, it's your
own damn fool fault and they'll get you in the morning. Go home or
hotel... there is no state paid agency for you in the wee hours. So, no
tax burden, no sales tax! I miss it all, but the extreme intense cold.
