Define small-and-medum sized companies.

I have written applications for several schools (guess they could be
defined as small businesses). I have also written some apps for
government agencies (they'd probably be classified as large
businesses). But I do my best to stay out of the app-writing business
because then I'd have to maintain and support said app, and I don't
have the time or the inclination.

But I am smart enough not to reinvent the wheel, which it sounds like
you're trying to do. Also the reason why I use Perl, because those
modules have always worked for me, and smarter people than me wrote
them.

Why don't you take a look at SQL-Ledger (it has a POS) and ask Dieter
Simader, the author, how he's handled it. (http://ww.sql-ledger.com/)

You have also said _nothing_ about your hardware or anything else
that's important, but it sounds like you want folks here to hand you
something.

RTFM, then see what already works. If you want to reinvent the wheel
and believe you're smarter than those that came before you, why are
you asking for help here?
