X server programming question

I have an X server related question tfor which I have not found a
satisfactory answer.
When a key is pressed, the X event contains a timestamp. It seems this
is timestamp is, by design, a relative value related to when the X
server started. Perfectly ok for relative timing, especially between
networked machine, for which X is designed.
I want to get the absolute PC time. I have seen discussions of this on
gaming sites, and no one has suggested a real solution. So, I am asking
here to see what knowledge there may be.
