Ubuntu 6.10 and checkinstall

Could you run checkinstall-1.6.0 on Ubuntu 6.10? Right now, I couldn't
access the homepage of Checkinstall. I tried running the Dapper version
of checkinstall, but it failed with a syntax error at line 71.
