The man page for smartctl doesn't suggest what to do for external
drives...
 	$ smartctl -d scsi /dev/external_hd
 	smartctl version 5.36 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
 	Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

 	Smartctl open device: /dev/external_hd failed: No such device or address

(The device shows up in /dev)
