The "visual mode" I mentioned has nothing to do with the graphical
version of vim (which is also "gvim" in gentoo). You're in visual mode
when you press Shift-V in normal mode, regardless of whether you're
working with gvim or vim. I use both versions (I tend to use vim for
short-time editing or editing as root---fron within KDE's konsole---and
gvim for more extensive work.)
