how deep switches look into the packets ?

I just had a weird problem this morning. All PCs/servers are on the same
LAN. This morning some users reported they can access only one server
( Windows ) and not the others ( Linux/samba ), and other reported the
reversed thing : they can access Linux/samba servers but not the other.
>From those PCs, I can successfully ping to all servers so the connection
must be ok therefore I guessed the problem at higher level. So I checked
samba on Linux servers, restarted Browse and relating services on
Windows server. That did not fix the problem.
Then I found if I connected to one cable then I could access Linux
servers, and if I connect to other cable then I could access only
Windows server. Looks like the problem is at the cable/switch ????
Then I restarted the switches and that solved the problem.
I thought those switches won't care about the SMB protocol information
embedded in IP packets, but this problem makes me think of the other
way.
Or was it because today is F13 ?
