glibc advice

Hi;
I have an old Caldera install that I like to run, largely because I
"know" it and I know where everything is. I have other newer installs
running also.
The Caldera is getting old; lots of new rpms want glibc 2.3. I
upgraded the old 2.2.X before using a SxS and that went fine. But many
say that "Oh, you gotta recompile everything using the new glibc if you
go to 2.3". But this is not clear to me: sounds like this means that
old apps that run on glibc 2.2 won't work on 2.3, yet old apps on a
distro with glibc 2.3 work fine. So I ask
"can I install glibc 2.3 without setting the atmosphere on fire or is it
easier just to learn a new distro?"
Thanks
