mdstat - what is this?

I've done a fair bit of Googling of this thing. Lots of hits, no 
answers. It appears to be created by EVMS. I'm not using EVMS so I'm 
going to try to disable it and see what happens. EVMS and LVM seem to be 
running on all my Ubuntu boxes whether being used or not.

I don't think this md255 thingee is a problem.
