I've used both (mostly ACOM Data external drives), and tend to
trust FireWire more than USB. On the other hand, I've had some
issues with FW drives disappearing on SuSE prior to 10.x
including SuSE Linux Enterprise 9.
This may well have been specific to certain machines as I've had
an external FireWire drive here on a FreeBSD 4.8 machine for
nearly three years without a glitch, and another on a SuSE 9.0
system that's been trouble free as well.
I tend to use external chassis that support both FW and USB 2.0
so they can be used on systems without FW.
